Combating Hunger in Kibera
In 2005 founder Nick Omondi took in street children as well as homeless, raped, and abandoned children to combat child-suffering in his neighborhood of the Mathare slums. Today, the non-profit organization, Tree House Children's Home, supports approximately 80 children and adolescents, providing them with a permanent home, an education that meets their needs, and comprehensive day care. Two members of the board, Caren Moirongo and Wolfgang Kesselring, were able to visit on site and to get to know this children's home. The great service for these children and young people as well as the involvement within the community is remarkable. The goal is to give the children and young people a future with confidence in a life off the streets, general care, and an education with potential job prospects. The precarious situation since COVID and rising food costs has heightened the situation of the children's homes, which are more than ever dependent on donations. Our NGO supports this institution to contribute to the fulfillment of the basic needs of the children and young people. The on-site coordination has been taken on by Ceasar Moirongo.
Pamela Owino, a single mother of five, started the centre 2002 out of necessity in order to support HIV affected and vulnerable orphans in the slums. She opened her 2-room apartment as a refuge. Meanwhile approximately 37 children of different ethnic backgrounds between the ages of 1 and 7 years live with Pamela; additional children in need visit the centre during the day as well. Pamela received support from Nick who organized day-to-day operations and spent quality time with the children. Our NGO was able to contribute to the fulfillment of the basic needs of these children: Starting with giving the children a roof over their heads, providing financial aid for food, clothing and medication, and enabling the children to attend school - which requires a great deal of financial resources (materials, school uniforms, etc.). These are the goals we strive for. Thanks to our regular financial support, we have been able to alleviate some of the burden and thus able to provide the children a home, a feeling of being part of a family and security. Since 2008 the »Paradise Community Centre« has official status in Nairobi as an NGO, but does not receives public funding. Pamela’s work at PCC with children of diverse ethnic backgrounds was and still is deeply admired. She passed away unexpectedly in Kibera in December 2020 and leaves five children of her own behind. Her eldest son Bobby, together with his siblings, took over the lead management of PCC in order to continue Pamela’s work. In 2022, the PCC was celebrated and recognized as a socially committed and humanitarian institution of Kibera. As of the beginning 2024 our financial assistance at PCC is no longer needed. With the help of local supporters, the PCC can now support its basic needs, such as food supplies. Our NGO has supported the children’s home for six years and we are delighted that the PCC has gained new local long-term contacts.
The former football player Puyol, a dedicated friend and supporter of the »Paradise Community Centre« (PCC), is actively involved in several initiatives aimed at providing food for elderly people, pregnant women, and mothers with young children in Kibera. The mission is to support vulnerable street children, young mothers, women, and families in the fight against hunger and malnutrition in Kibera's slums. With soaring food prices and increasing unemployment, young mothers and women in these areas face immense challenges in providing their children with essential food. Alarmingly, nearly 60% of children here receive fewer than two meals a day, leading to severe malnutrition and health complications. Puyol supports several nutrition programs that regularly distribute food to children and families in need. One such initiative is the »Uji« (Porridge), designed specifically for children aged 6 months to 10 years. This program provides nutritious porridge to combat malnutrition and promote healthy growth in children. Additionally, vulnerable families receive food baskets containing basic staples, ensuring they have access to necessary nourishment. These distributions also serve as opportunities to educate the community about balanced nutrition, with a special focus on children's dietary needs. Our non-profit organization is committed to supporting Puyol's efforts to make a lasting impact on the lives of children and families in Kibera. Together, we strive to bring hope and sustenance to those who need it most.
